Why can jewelry leave green marks on the skin?
Have you noticed that a bracelet, ring, or other jewelry leaves a green mark on your skin? This is a question we occasionally receive from our customers, and fortunately, the answer is simple: It is completely normal and does not mean there is anything wrong with the jewelry.
Why does the skin turn green?
Many pieces of jewelry are made with a copper base, which is then coated with, for example, silver or gold. Copper is a common and safe material, but it can react with:
- The skin’s natural pH value
- Sweat
- Hand cream and body lotion
- Perfume
- Soap and cleaning products
- Humidity and heat
When these factors affect the metal, a green mark can sometimes form on the skin. This is a natural chemical reaction and is completely harmless.
Does this mean the jewelry is defective?
No. Green marks on the skin do not mean the jewelry is of poor quality or defective. It is a well-known characteristic of copper-based jewelry and largely depends on individual differences.
Some people experience it often, while others never do.
Is it harmful?
No. The green color is not harmful and can easily be washed off with water and soap.
How can you reduce the risk?
You can reduce the risk by:
- Removing jewelry when bathing, exercising, and sleeping.
- Avoiding direct contact with perfume, hand cream, and hair products.
- Wiping jewelry with a soft cloth after use.
- Storing jewelry in a dry place when not in use.
