Safe use of a baby sleeping bag: sleeping position, fit and temperature

Safe use of a baby sleeping bag: sleeping position, fit and temperature

Short answer: If you use a baby sleeping bag, you should still follow the general advice on safe baby sleep: put the infant to sleep on their back, avoid letting the baby get too warm, make sure their face is uncovered, and use a size and model that fit the baby.

This article is about safe use and fit. If you instead want to know what your baby can wear under the sleeping bag, read What should a baby wear in a sleeping bag?.

1. Always put the infant to sleep on their back

The Danish Health Authority recommends that infants are always put to sleep on their backs. A sleeping bag does not change this basic advice.

See the Danish Health Authority's current recommendations on preventing sudden infant death syndrome and safe sleep.

2. Choose a sleeping bag that fits properly

Always follow the size information and instructions for the specific sleeping bag. The neck and arm openings should be designed so that the child cannot slip down into the bag, and there should be room for natural movement of the legs and hips.

A larger size is not necessarily better if the fit becomes too loose. Therefore, use the child's current size rather than buying solely with extra room for growth.

3. Avoid letting the baby get too warm

The Danish Health Authority recommends that infants should not get too warm during sleep. Feel the baby on the chest, back, or neck. If the skin feels very warm or damp, you should reduce the warmth or number of layers.

Hands and feet may feel cooler without necessarily meaning that the baby is cold.

If you want to work more specifically with layers and temperature, also see Which sleeping bag temperature should you choose?.

4. Keep the face and airways clear

The sleeping bag should fit so that the material cannot slide up over the child's face. Also keep the sleeping area free of loose items that the child could get around their face.

If the product's fit or size seems wrong, you should stop using the model and choose a size or design that fits better.

5. Follow the product's own instructions

Sleeping bags can vary in material, warmth rating, sleeves, and fit. Therefore, general advice is not a substitute for the manufacturer's instructions. Always use the information for the specific sleeping bag together with the general health advice.

When should you pay extra attention?

  • If the child is sweating or feels very warm.
  • If the sleeping bag seems too loose around the neck or shoulders.
  • If the child can slide far down into the bag.
  • If the child has a fever or is ill.
  • If you are unsure about temperature, sleep, or safety.

In case of illness or uncertainty about your baby's sleep and temperature, you should follow advice from a health visitor, doctor, or other relevant healthcare professional.
